Analgesics Position Statement

The American Animal Hospital Association recommends that veterinarians routinely administer appropriate analgesics to minimize pain in their patients.

Analgesics need to be used preemptively for any medical condition or veterinary procedure associated with pain and for as long as necessary to prevent pain during recovery. AAHA agrees with The American College of Veterinary Anesthesiologists that if a procedure is painful to humans it will be painful to animals. Canine Devocalization Position Statement

The American Animal Hospital Association is opposed to the practice known as debarking, canine devocalization or vocal cordectomy.

Devocalization for inappropriate and excessive vocalization is often ineffective in achieving the desired results and can deprive canines of the ability to perform a normal behavior. Appropriate behavioral modification efforts should be employed that avoid the use of punishment or aversive methods. When deemed necessary, devocalization should only be performed by qualified, licensed veterinarians as a final alternative to relinquishment or euthanasia. Exceptions to this statement would be in the rare case of airway obstruction or laryngeal paralysis which cannot be addressed through other surgical procedures.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – October 2, 2012 – Kasel Associated Industries of Denver, CO is voluntarily recalling its NATURE’S DELI CHICKEN JERKY DOG TREATS product because it may be contaminated with Salmonella. Salmonella can sicken animals that eat these products and humans are at risk for salmonella poisoning from handling contaminated pet products, especially if they have not thoroughly washed their hands after having contact with the pet products or any surfaces exposed to these products.

Healthy people infected with Salmonella should monitor themselves for some or all of the following symptoms: nausea, vomiting, diarrhea or bloody diarrhea, abdominal cramping and fever. Rarely, Salmonella can result in more serious ailments, including arterial infections, endocarditis, arthritis, muscle pain, eye irritation, and urinary tract symptoms. Sunland, Inc. Announces an Expansion of its Voluntarily Limited Recall of Almond Butter and Peanut Butter To Add Cashew Butter, Tahini and Roasted Blanched Peanut Products Due to Possible Health Risk

UPDATED FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE – September 24, 2012 – Sunland, Inc. today announced a voluntary recall of its Almond Butter and Peanut Butter, which it has now expanded to include its Cashew Butter, Tahini and Roasted Blanched Peanut Products. This recall is limited to products manufactured between May 1, 2012 and September 24, 2012. These products may be contaminated with Salmonella, an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and those with weakened immune systems. Healthy persons infected with Salmonella often experience fever, diarrhea (which may be bloody), nausea, vomiting and abdominal pain. In rare circumstances, infection with Salmonella can result in the organism getting into the bloodstream and producing more severe illnesses such as arterial infections (i.e., infected aneurysms), endocarditis and arthritis.

The voluntary recall was initiated after learning that between June 11, 2012 and September 2, 2012, twenty-nine people reported Salmonella Bredeney PFGE matching illnesses in approximately 18 states, including Washington, California, Arizona, Texas, Louisiana, Missouri, Illinois, Minnesota, Michigan, Pennsylvania, Massachusetts, New York, Rhode Island, North Carolina, Virginia, Connecticut, New Jersey and Maryland, according to a report issued on September 22, 2012 by the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

Hill’s Pet Nutrition to reformulate Science Diet petfoods

Hill’s Pet Nutrition will reformulate its Science Diet dogs and cat foods to add more natural ingredients.

The company made the decision to reformulate the Science Diet petfoods because some consumers were making product choices based primarily on a set criteria for ingredients, rather than the overall promise of nutrition and clinical research. Hill’s says the new Science Diet dog and cat food formulas will feature:

• Quality protein as the first ingredient
• Natural ingredients
• No chicken by-product
• No artificial colors or flavors
• Great taste, guaranteed

Along with the new formulation, Hill’s also will introduce new packaging designs, as well as new color-coded product groupings under Life Stage, Life Style and Life Care, which will soon appear in pet stores to make it easier for pet owners to select the right food for their pet. Hill’s will begin shipping the new petfood formulations to specialty pet stores and veterinarians in December.
